Dr. El Khatib expertise is on power system economics, electricity markets and power aggregation. He currently serves as an Expert Advisor at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure leading the development of UAE first Electricity Market.

Dr. Sameh El Khatib is also the CEO of SmartWatt, an Emirati-based global energy services company. SmartWatt mission is pioneering sustainability through digitalization and power intelligence. SmartWatt offers power aggregation to mine power flexibility, and monetize it through its services to end-users, power utilities and grid operators. SmartWatt provides its comprehensive and holistic, Machine Learning-driven energy services through its state-of-the-art integrated Digital Twin & Active Energy Management platform.

Dr. Sameh El Khatib received his PhD in Electrical Engineering, as well as his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from McGill University. His work focused on power system analysis and economics, electricity market restructuring and planning. He was a Professor in the Engineering Systems and Management department at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi and was a visiting professor at MIT in Boston. As a visiting professor at MIT, he focused his research on the security challenges, both cyber and physical, in interfacing the grid’s physical structure with the new smart system layers of the emerging cyber physical smart power grids.

Before joining Masdar, Dr. El Khatib was an energy expert with Booz and Co. working on strategic projects in Energy Sector. Before being appointed as CEO of SmartWatt, Dr. El Khatib was a director of energy & power division, as well as senior energy advisor for the CEO of ICAD, one of the largest KSA based system technology & integration companies in the region.
